Here is a checklist to determine if you are at risk for Type 2 Diabetes. Review this list and see how many items apply to you. If you answer “yes” to a lot of these items, you are at risk for Type 2 Diabetes or may already have it.
- Family history of diabetes.
- Age greater than 45.
- Poor diet and nutrition.
- Genetic background is Alaska Native, American Indian, African American, Hispanic/Latino, Asian American, or Pacific Islander.
- For women, gestational diabetes or you gave birth to at least one baby weighing more than 9 pounds.
- Blood pressure is 140/90 mm Hg or above or you are diagnosed with high blood pressure.
- Cholesterol levels are not normal.
- Triglycerides are not normal (above 250 mg/dl).
- Excess body weight, especially around the waist.
- Low activity level.
- For women, diagnosed with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).
- Previously tested positive for impaired glucose tolerance
(IGT) or impaired fasting glucose (IFG). - History of cardiovascular disease.
