Should I be concerned if I have been diagnosed with pre-diabetes?
Yes! Current conventional wisdom says that your fasting blood sugar is normal when it is between 70-110 mg/dl, you are pre-diabetic between 110-140 mg/dl, and diabetic at greater than 140 mg/dl. Of course, there is disagreement on what ranges should be used. I am using these ranges now, but “experts” are currently trending toward a more strict measurement for Type 2 Diabetes, usually 126 mg/dl or higher.
The point is that if your fasting blood glucose (FBG) is consistently over 110, you have a problem. So why call one level pre-diabetes and the next level Type 2 Diabetes? The fact is that if your FBG is over 110, something is not working right, and you should be taking action to fix the problem.
So I am calling Type 2 Diabetes and pre-diabetes two parts of the same condition, with Type 2 diabetes obviously a more advanced condition of insulin resistance than pre-diabetes.
I believe that the two conditions should both be considered as Type 2 Diabetes and treatment should start as soon as someone is identified with FBG consistently over 110.
Please understand that it is important to get started as soon as possible on a treatment plan to prevent further complications and suffering if you are diagnosed with type 2 diabetes OR pre-diabetes.
