What is a good diet for diabetics?

With over 15,000 diet books in print, picking the right diet would seem like an impossible task. But, the key here is not to necessarily pick one particular diet; the key is to change your daily diet to eat the right foods so that you can normalize your weight and blood sugar levels.

This is a complicated subject and I will be going into this in great detail in Stomping Diabetes: Learning About Diet, Exercise, Food and Nutrition for Diabetics. For now, let me give you the short answer of what I do.

1. Work to make 70-80 percent of your foods alkaline and the remainder acidic foods. That means a lot of vegetables and not so much meat, especially red meat!

2. Use the glycemic index to help you choose foods with a lower glycemic index and load.

3. Avoid all foods made with processed sugars, like candy, pastries, etc.

4. Limit your intake of grain products, in particular use only whole grain breads and cereals. Personally I eat very few foods that are made from processed grains.

5. Eliminate use of sodas, whether diet or regular.

6. Avoid products that contain aspartame or high fructose corn syrup.

Well, I guess that's enough of a short answer. There is a lot more to know and learn and put into practice to reach that goal of no more type 2 diabetes.
