What percentages of carbohydrates, fats, and proteins should we eat each day?
What this question means is what percentage of our total calories each day come from carbs, fats, and proteins.
I have become obsessed with solving the answer to this question. Unfortunately there is no simple answer and probably no right answer as there are so many conflicting opinions and recommendations on this issue.
The most common recommendations are these:
- 50-60% from carbohydrates
- 20-35% from fats
- 10-25% from proteins
The USDA recommends about 27% from fats, 18% from proteins, and 55% from carbohydrates. WOW! For a 2,000 calories diet that would mean 275 carbs. That is way too many in my opinion.
My recommendation is to get no more than 40% of your calories from any one source. I recently read that the Joslin Diabetes Center makes that same recommendation. Of course, you need to experiment and test what works the best for you.
I have found that my percentages usually stay within this recommendation and when I go over 40% for any of the three, it is always fat that is the culprit.
I will discuss this question in more detail in my ebook, Stomping Diabetes: Kill Your Type 2 Diabetes Before It Kills You, My Plan to Beat Diabetes.
