Yes it can! Diabetes causes more deaths every year than breast cancer and aids combined. The World Health Organization estimates that more than 1.1 million people died from diabetes in 2005. That is a low estimate and the number is expected to double by 2030.

Here is a simple tip to keep on top of your diabetes. It’s called the ABC Program and can help you control your type 2 diabetes or pre-diabetes.

A is for A1c. Be sure to get your hemoglobin A1c tested every three months. This indicates how well you are controlling your blood sugar over time. Diabetics should maintain an A1c under 7. Normal is 4-6.

Exercise is one of the most important things that you can do to help your type 2 diabetes or pre-diabetes. My best recommendation for exercise is walking an hour a day, every day. I love walking and usually walk 6-8 miles every day. This has had great positive effects on controlling my blood sugar.

Yes! Current conventional wisdom says that your fasting blood sugar is normal when it is between 70-110 mg/dl, you are pre-diabetic between 110-140 mg/dl, and diabetic at greater than 140 mg/dl. Of course, there is disagreement on what ranges should be used. I am using these ranges now, but “experts” are currently trending toward a more strict measurement for Type 2 Diabetes, usually 126 mg/dl or higher.
