Red, Itchy Underarms, a Common Problem for Diabetics

0

Red, itchy underarms are a common problem for diabetics. While there are many possible causes for this problem, it is often the result of high blood sugar levels. People often make the assumption that their deodorant is causing an allergic reaction resulting in the redness and itching. Possibly, but that is probably not the culprit.

I read in a diabetes forum (somewhere but I can’t find that thread now) about this issue and a doctor responded that this problem is simply an irritation of the skin and not usually a rash or fungus problem. His suggested treatment is to use 1% hydrocortisone anti-itch ointment. I have had this problem in the past and have used this treatment. It works great! Within just a few days my red, itchy underarms were itch free and the redness went away.

So if you are experiencing red, itchy underarms, there is a simple, inexpensive solution; 1% hydrocortisone anti-itch ointment, found at most any drug store. Be sure to get OINTMENT and not the anti-itch cream, which will not work!

As always, be sure to check with your doctor when you are experiencing problems like this to validate any treatment options used.
